Communication goals can range from teaching first words and sounds to improving conversations with others and more. Our therapists are trained in teaching/incorporating ASL (American Sign Language), PECS (Picture Exchange Communication Systems), Proloquo (a technological/tablet-based system) and vocalization training. Our main goal in communication development is to increase the use of functional communication- the ability to ask for what is wanted, communicate when things aren't wanted, engage in conversations, and communicate with the world around us!

Communication Development

────

Social Skill Development

────

Depending on age and individual needs, social skill goals may vary greatly. For some smaller kiddos, playing with and talking to other kids doesn't always come naturally. That's where we come in- We can work on how to approach peers and how to respond when approached by a friend. Sometimes we work on how to interact with peers and adults, such as how to carry on a conversation or sometimes the importance of carrying on a conversation when you don't want to. We teach problem solving skills to improve the quality of relationships and more advanced skills such as reading non-verbal body cues and understanding sarcasm.

Decreasing Problem Behaviors ────

Challenging behaviors can develop for a variety of reasons and can make day-to-day life difficult. Our BCBA's will perform a functional assessment to help determine WHY the behavior is occurring. Then, an individualized plan can be created to replace the problem behavior with an appropriate response. Inappropriate behaviors may include things like screaming, biting, throwing things, aggression, stereotypy, elopement, spitting, lying, stealing, and self-injurious behaviors. We strongly emphasize family involvement and working on goals in a variety of settings (home, school, restaurant, park, etc.) to promote generalization of skills.

Self Help Skills

────

We focus on developing skills such as hygiene routines, toilet training, chore completion, meal preparation, money and time management,  and other skills needed to increase independence and function in day-to-day life.

Collaboration

Our BCBA works closely with parents, family members, and other professionals to provide the most comprehensive support possible.

Community Outings

Life occurs outside of a clinic or office, and so should effective ABA therapy. Depending on the individual needs, regular outings are scheduled to ensure skills generalize to different places and people. Outings may be to parks, stores, or other common areas around town.

School Support

Our BCBA  can provide assistance with IEP meetings, behavioral support in the classroom (depending on the county, school, and situation), and will consult with teachers.
