What is ABA?

Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the leading, research based methodology proven to bring about positive, meaningful changes in behaviors in individuals with autism and learning disabilities. ABA therapy programs can help increase language and communication skills,

improve attention, focus, social skills, memory, and academics, and decrease problem behaviors. ABA has been endorsed by state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General. More information can be found on the following CDC website:

What ABA therapy

looks like

When most people think therapy, they usually imagine the traditional scene of laying on a couch and talking to someone about life. ABA therapy does NOT follow this classic therapeutic method.

ABA therapy can take many forms, and just like each individual is different every therapy program will look different! Each client will have a program designed specifically for their needs, considering their strengths, weaknesses, goals, barriers, and interests!

Each client will have a team of support around them, consisting of one BCBA (Board Certified Behavioral Analyst) and 1-2 registered behavioral therapists. Therapy may sometimes looks like playing at the park or going to a restaurant/store in Natural Environmental Teaching(NET), or may look more like a structured activity during Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT) sessions, it may be conducted with peers during Social Skills Training, or it may be a 1:1 session working on Self-Help and Communication skills.

Much of what ABA therapy will look like will depend on what will best help the individual reach his/her personalized goals!

When & Where does ABA therapy place?

The location of ABA therapy may be in the clinic, home, school, in aftercare, and/or in the community (e.g., the store, park, playground, organized activity, etc.). The number of recommended therapy hours varies, but generally ranges from 4-30 hours per week depending on the medical necessity, clinical needs, and logistics.
